The follow-up book to Lost for Words continues John Humphry's blistering attack on the mangling and manipulation of language. An important book because language reveals so much about how and what we think.
Politicians stand by the 'totality' of their words but dupe us with deliberately evasive language. In this personal account from Britain's leading political journalist, John Humphrys argues the English language is a beautiful language which should give us pleasure, not pain. Where it is not clear, simple and honest we need to ask why - and do something about it.
Devil's Advocate draws on 40 years of experience to look at the changes that have been happening in Britain and possible future scenarios. It doesn't offer any easy solutions but encourages readers to dissent and keep questioning the accepted wisdom.
As one might expect from the tenacious presenter of Radio 4's Today programme, John Humphrys' critique of modern faming is certainly strident in tone. An organic farmer himself, Humphrys has little truck with the intensive methods favoured by most of the industry and encouraged by the government and the large supermarket chains. Here he traces the development of factory farming from its origins just after the Second World War to today. He argues that the food industry's claims that the practises provide 'cheap' food for all are an outright lie. The relentless drive for higher yields has only produced higher profits for the multinationals at the expense of our health and the environment. The BSE crisis and food and mouth are only the tip of the iceberg as far as he is concerned, the widespread use of pesticides and antibiotics threaten to destroy our entire eco-structure. The Great Food Gamble is an impassioned and engaging plea for a more sensible attitude to farming.
