How to Lead

How to Manage

This session shows what it takes to succeed as a practicing manager. How to Manage shows that being smart (high IQ) and emotionally intelligent (high EQ) are not enough. We all know of people who are not so smart and not so nice who succeed. The missing element is PQ: political quotient.

How To Manage takes the ideas of IQ, EQ and PQ and shows how, in a management setting, these are all learnable skills. You do not need to be born with the right character or brains to succeed. The session explores the core skills all managers must learn to be effective:

  • IQ: dealing with tasks, problems and money
  • EQ: dealing with people, including yourself
  • PQ: making things happen through networks and alliances.

The session shows how managers can learn these skills. It shows how managers make things happen in complex organisations where responsibilities routinely exceed authority. It is about management as it is, not management as it should be.

How To Manage was published by Pearson in 2006. Personnel Today described it as "easily the best book on management so far".
