The idea of giving up the security of a well-paid city job as one of the UK’s leading advertising lawyers (at the top of her game) to see if a germ of an idea could be developed into a successful product would, for many of us might seem like a high risk strategy!
That’s exactly what Solvej Biddle did in 2007. Like many good products, the Cot CanopyTM was born out of need. Cot Canopy launched at the beginning of 2009 to universal acclaim by retailers, press and parents.
Without skipping a beat a second winning design came through the developmental stage and started production. Solvej took TrayKit®, a backpack which turns into a playspace for children when they are travelling, to Dragons’ Den in the summer of 2010 and promptly started a bidding war amongst the fiery five. In an unprecedented move Peter Jones offered her the full amount, no questions asked and after four more offers and turning the tables to give the Dragons a good grilling, she finally accepted a joint offer from Peter Jones and Deborah Meaden for the full amount of £80,000.
Solvej Biddle was named 'Woman Business Owner' of the Year at the Network of Aspiring Women Awards 2011.
